Does anyone have XP and Ubuntu on one system. I am interested in a dual boot system, I have already partition my hard drive using Gparted.
I wanted to know if installing Ubuntu is difficult.

Creating a dual-boot system with XP and Linux is very easy. I think Ubuntu was what I used when I did it myself a couple years ago.

Here's a video on how to do it and an article on Ubuntu's website.

There are hundreds of articles online ready to walk you through it.

You can use the Ubuntu live cd. No need to install it permanently if you don't want to mess with all that. Just boot it up when you need to=)

Where's the fun in that?
I tried the Live CD also, before installing. It was way too slow.

Not hard at all. There's some fouling up that can occur with the MBR, but it's not TOO awfully common and not that hard to fix back up.

Just as a tip...it's usually a good idea to do the windows install first and then the Linux install, as windows is greedy and will assume that it's the only OS on the system and hijack the MBR and you'll have to redo the bootloader if you install it after Linux.

You might consider giving this it's own thread...

Do you want to leave the other (Windows?) partition intact, or do you plan on wiping it as well and starting fresh. If it's the latter, when you are performing the Windows install, it should ask you where you want to install it and you can manipulate the partitions from there. If it's the former, you can try some utilities like Partition Magic to do it in place. Try here.

You will need to rebuild the Windows boot loader:

You can do it with the installation disk.

Its really easy to set up, just follow the instructions.

First, do like in did , Start with the Live Cd, then you will fall in love and setup the Dual Boot . Then, Just Erase Uninstall windows, run full Ubuntu and use and virtual machine for Windows XD
