I never really got into that type of thing. Occasionally it's a fun toy that I'll turn on in emacs, bluej (when I was using it for the class I taught...barf), or Visual-what-have-you, but generally I don't use it.

Good coding practices (indentation, keeping track of brackets, braces, parenteses, quotes, etc.) eliminate most of the problems like that, but there have definitely been times where I've spent WAY too much time trying to track down what's causing a page to display wrong or a program to not compile and it's been a simple forgotten quote that would have been easily found if things in quotes were a certain color.

RE: Objectives of learing HTML
masfonos (4/29/2009)
True, that is one of the good things...pick a color from a palette and it gives you the code for it. I generally just open up GIMP and pick a color and copy the code from there
I mean the actual code itself. It turns certain things dark blue, light blue, red, and green. So when you're sorting through your code, it's easier to interpret and differentiate tags from properties.

RE: Objectives of learing HTML

True, that is one of the good things...pick a color from a palette and it gives you the code for it. About the only improvement in my coding environment is that I've graduated to either WordPad or Nano as editors.

I've played around with Front Page and Coffee Cup a little bit and I just can't get into any of those WYSIWYG editors. It comes in kind of handy sometimes I guess to have it auto-complete tags when you're writing raw code, but it feels like a toy or something to build pages with a WYSIWYG editor without being able to see the code.

They may be good enough for building EXTREMELY simple pages, but for anything with real functionality, you need to be able to better interact with the server, the user, embedded scripts, etc.

RE: Objectives of learing HTML

Not knowing HTML and trying to make a website is like riding a motorcycle without ever having ridden a bicycle. It's the basis of everything and if you want to be able to truly design web sites, you need to know tricks of the language to make it work the best for you.

RE: Objectives of learing HTML

I agree. HTML editors or integrated development environment tools can speed up our web development process. But there is no subsitute for learning the very basic HTML coding. It definitely helps us better solve problems in our codes.

Objectives of learing HTML

With the easy availability of different editors generally people do not spend much time into hardcore coding. I have always believed that one should know the engine which is running at the back-end. In this case it is HTML coding. If we know the language on our own then we can take the help of editors to build the skeleton and then use our knowledge to fine-tune it.
