This is mostly because they are trying to develop better separation of content from how things look.

For instance, the reason why you should no longer use the [bold] tag, is because it tells the browser something related to how it should be drawn. HTML should only be used for content, CSS should be used for all styling. That is the same reason why the table tag is deprecated as well.

RE: Depreciation of tags

Why on earth would you limit the use of the < b > tag other than for the fact you didnt want to use it ?

I never excessively spammed it but I think its a bit strange that the search engines are penalizing people who excessively bold things.

Though I guess it is a tactic of internet marketers so it may be something the algorithims have been trained to pick out.

RE: Depreciation of tags

Lot of people saying Dreamweaver is the best/good. Is that still the consensus? I just bought it, like using it, and now I hear about being compliant...lol. Only one client has been a stickler about it, but it's still good to know...

Have to build a music site and load times and google ranking are pretty important. I'm assuming the more compliant the less problems down the line right?

RE: Depreciation of tags

i hate that instead of < br >
you have to use < br / >
RE: Depreciation of tags

I use visual studio and it validates my HTML against W3C recommendations..

Another thing you can do is validate some of your pages in the W3C validator and see the result. I think the main reason for the depreciation of so many HTML tags is the fact that the web development world is going more focus on other technologies. HTML is the barebones of any website. We have so many other languages and technologies to handle the more advanced features of a web site. CSS for instance, it is a lot easier to create the skeleton of a website in HTML and then apply a CSS StyleSheet to it to interpret how it looks. Then we can simply apply another stylesheet to it when we want to change the look. If it were mostly HTML, then it would take us a lot longer to modify our pages.

RE: Depreciation of tags

I like Dreamweaver the best.

RE: Depreciation of tags

Macromedia Dreamweaver is very respectable;)

RE: Depreciation of tags

I use
a lot when I am using my business website and on myspace

RE: Depreciation of tags

It's quite sad that some tags are getting shunned...

RE: Depreciation of tags

Well <center> tag is also depreciated so it would be good to learn some css then you can center your text or images. :P

RE: Depreciation of tags

Macromedia Dreamweaver is very respectable...definitely the number one web development software package available right now.

RE: Depreciation of tags

Well I've never trusted FrontPage; I only use Dreamweaver and my code is usually always compliant; in those rare cases where it isn't it is usually my fault.

RE: Depreciation of tags

Frontpage does have that problem. I am using Frontpage and I let it handle. While it is easy to use, it produces some of the worst code possible for your site. Your page becomes very bloated with extra code where potentially it could effect your load times.

RE: Depreciation of tags

Either Frontpage or Dreamweaver is very useful for having total control. It does a good job of keeping my code compliant.[/quote]

I agree with Viral Unity. Just ensure that you have a good IDE and let the IDE handle that. It's such a small thing that I don't think you should worry about it too much. I'm personally not a big fan of the compliance gurus who always insist on compliance when sometimes it just doesn't make sense to be 100% compliant on everything you produce.

RE: Depreciation of tags

I use Dreamweaver a lot. I also seem to be very behind on this kind of thing, without reading the W3C site everyday, how do you keep on top of this. For example, I used to love the <b> tag, but people keep telling me not to use it anymore. Some tips would be appreciated!
